Got Metaphor? Open Minds, Close Deals, & Wow Crowds

November 2 2010

When I attended 85 Broads member Jane Newton’s Wall Street Women’s Forum negotiation skills seminar on October 26 (“Negotiate Like The Big Boys”), I had the opportunity to chat with author, speaker and seminar leader, Anne Miller. I’ve already posted an article “Count Your Chips: Prepare, Pause then Negotiate” on Anne’s seminar, and here, with Anne’s kind permission, I’m posting a follow-up article, written by Anne:

How well you communicate is determined not by how well we say things, but by how well we are understood. Andy Grove, former Chairman and CEO, Intel

Count Your Chips: Prepare, Pause then Negotiate

“Negotiate like the Big Boys” – October 26, 2010

Last night 85 Broads member, Jane Newton of RegentAtlantic Capital held a second event as part of her firm’s “Wall Street Women Forum,” a group of highly accomplished senior Wall Street Women. The workshop, entitled “Negotiate like the Big Boys,” was led by Anne Miller, an executive coach, author and expert on managing one’s own career. Duane Morris LLP, the global law firm, hosted the event in their mid-town office.

What did I get out of it? Best of course is the community of women that builds almost instantly when a powerful group of…

Carrying the Corporate Reputation

September 18 2010

Goldman Sachs was slapped with a gender discrimination lawsuit this week and one of the people providing commentary on the latest “Goldman Sachs in the news”, is a former Goldman Sachs partner. Read the commentary published on Bloomberg [bloomberg.com] for the former partner’s viewpoint – and gender.

When an employer gets sued, it’s really not surprising that “formers” come out swinging on both sides of the lawsuit. Here’s the thing, the “formers” (partners, managers, employees) worke…

How Does Your Firm Rank?

September 17 2010

U.S. News has entered the law firm ranking game. No surprise, the profession likes its lists (I’m actually wondering why they waited this long to enter this segment of the ranking business…). While reading an article accompanying the rankings, I came across the quote “There will be life after the Great Recession” made in reference to the unprecedented number of layoffs the profession experienced in 2008/2009. The quote inspired a few more thoughts on all those law firm alums and how they rank the firms that had let them go.

August 7 2010

Last month, I was fortunate to be asked to participate in a 2-day client symposium for law firm CMOs and Managing Partners put together by my brilliant friends at The Wicker Park Group [wickerparkgroup.com]. Nat and Laura curated a highly interactive and engaged group of professionals to discuss innovative law firm marketing initiatives, cutting-edge client service and focused business development strategies- all with an underlying focus on what’s game-changing now.

To discuss what’s game-changing, you need to know something about the traits of game-changers. The fabulous Sara …

Are You A Small Business Entrepreneur Who Travels?

June 4 2010

I was contacted this morning by a business writer for a major national newspaper. This writer is looking for small business owners who travel for business and whose employees travel for business.

With a global network of inspired, empowered women – many who are small business entrepreneurs – I suspect you have opinions on business travel.

Here are the questions the business writer wants to discuss:

One: Do you manage your employees’ business travel in any way? If so, what travel management companies/tools do you use?

Two: If not, how do your employees arrange/plan their trave…

Cynicism, Transparency & Authentic Connections

May 31 2010

On May 25th 85 Broads and Collective-E members gathered together to discuss social ventures: not-for-profit organizations and for-profit companies that “give back” or being more visionary about the type of world we want to live in, “give forward” to improve lives, communities and the plant.

Organized by Beth Schoenfeldt, co-founder of Collective-E and Diana Sonis of 85 Broads, the evening focused on an interactive panel discussion. The panel was made up of 85Broad and Collective-E members – who all had an interesting mix of experiences. Here’s Beth’s overview of the evening:

Relax & Enjoy the Conversation

Networking. Why does the word strike fear into the hearts of so many professionals (particularly lawyers)? Networking is about connecting with other people. That’s right, connecting. Not schmoozing, not sales, not “what can you do for me right now”. Think long-term relationship building, rapport, meaningful, genuine connections. And building those sort of relationships takes time – so no short-cuts, quick “how to” or 3 step guides, or you’re likely to shortcut the opportunity to really get to know someone.

This applies whether you connect with someone in person or online. There is a r…
