Exhausted, conflicted and agitated. Sometimes when life has me feeling that way, I know it's time to simply step back, sit still and refocus my energies on something greater than myself. I also know those are the times when my work can become more creative; more powerful. It's because in essence, I decide to get out of my own way and concentrate on ways to help other people. Especially women. I just find us gals tend to bond in unique ways. The power we draw from one another is like nothing else.
So, let me share with you a project I recently worked on that has resulted in a pretty cool connection between two women I know. One is older, established in her career and passionate about helping save lives. She’s an accomplished nurse. The other is a young mother, just getting started in life and wanting to do the best for herself and her daughter.
Long story short... a few months ago I produced an amazing half-hour television special for my former station, WTVJ-NBC6. I focused on medical programs at Broward Health - a family of hospitals here in South Florida. Our focus was pediatric services.
One segment highlighted the work of doctors and nurses in the neonatal unit. Take a look at the story and tell me if that doesn’t just melt your heart???
Now, roll forward several months. I’m in the throws of producing a project for Children’s Harbor Foster Care Agency. This place is awesome! It makes sure that brothers and sisters aren’t split up when placed in foster care and it offers homes to foster teens who are pregnant or already mothers. That way mom and baby can stay together. How cool is that?
So I’m interviewing a young mother and ask her what her career goals are. She says she wants to be a nurse. I ask what medical specialty. She says pediatrics...NeoNatal.
Coincidence? I don’t think so! You know where this is going right??
A few phone calls later... and the young mother is having a private tour and introduction with one of the leading neonatal doctors in the area!!
Women helping women - now THAT’S what I’m talking about! Sharing knowledge, giving advice, offering mentoring and encouragement. You can’t beat that.
I feel better just telling you about this. So while Silva and I try to keep our sanity in this quirky world of relationships that we typically talk about, there is some calmness. I figure if I spend enough time focusing on how to help others...especially women... I think the rest of the elements of my life will fall into place...
Ciao~
