As July draws to a close, it has been all but a dull month, bringing its share of grave and even tragic news. From news of the shocking massacre by a 32-year old Norwegian man of scores of innocent youth activists on the island of Utoya in Norway, to the political brinksmanship march towards a (voluntary) US default, to Europe’s rescue packages to fend off (involuntary) defaults in Greece and larger Eurozone economies, to news of the UN airlift to save millions of women and children from famine in Somalia––and images I thought we should never see again in the XXIst century.
July has also brought us the riveting saga of the phone hacking scandal that has since engulfed Britain’s law-enforcement, political and media elites. Surely I thought, my next post would be on either of these fittingly weighty topics. Until I read one news headlines that had me put my pen down, and think again about this one topic.
